Nursery Works mission is to provide, clean, simple, handcrafted contemporary furnishings made with environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes. We put great thought into the way our furniture is produced. We make sure that from design to production, Nursery Works is improving the way furniture is made.

Safe and Renewable Materials

Nursery Works uses renewable materials. Paulownia wood is a key material. It is a fast-growing, richly grained, light weight and fire and decay-resistant hardwood species that takes stain beautifully and won't warp, split or crack. Thanks to its deep root network and its unusual physiology, it can help reclaim ecologically stressed land relatively quickly by upgrading the organic content of degraded soils. In addition, reclaimed white oak and recyclable acrylic are used for limited run products.

  • Bentwood for rockers
  • Birch wood
  • Panel + mattress support = MDF

When construction requires the use of medium density fiberboard (MDF), Nursery Works is Carb II Compliant. While others may use fiberboard that leaks anywhere from 9mg to 39 mg per 100 grams of board, Nursery Works only uses MDF which release less than .5mg per liter.

Rocker legs made of Ash Hardwood and upholstered with water-resistant, stain-resistant microsuede. The foam used is Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) free.

Finish, Lacquers, Glues and Dyes

Nursery Works uses low-VOC finishes, lacquers and glues. They dyes we use are always formaldehyde-free and compliant to CPSC standards. Our products are tested to governmental standards on a quarterly basis and are certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). In addition, our products are air-chamber tested to examine and eliminate toxic materials. The testing methods are intense and measure materials down to parts per billion. Our first concern is that our products are not emitting toxins.

  • Our products are all formaldehyde and lead safe; the formaldehyde level for all of our furniture is undetectable.
  • Paint is considered safe when it has toxic materials under 300 parts per million (ppm). In order for a company to claim low toxicity, it must have no more than 90 ppm. Nursery Works products come in at less than 10ppm.
  • We perform annual paint tests in order to maintain consistent quality, exceeding JPMA regulations.

Testing and Quality Control

  • All our products are sent to a 3rd party CPSC-certified lab for testing to ensure compliance with ASTM standards.
  • After JPMA-certification, 25% of our full-size crib models are tested quarterly to adhere to all guidelines and remain active participants of the JPMA Certification Program.
  • We perform annual paint tests to ensure consistent quality, exceeding JPMA regulations.
  • We have created our own rigorous quality control program to stay ahead of industry standards. A quality control team at our production site individually checks and hand packs each piece to ensure the highest quality of craftsmanship before products leave our factory doors. Items are inspected and assembled again by another team upon arrival in the US.
